Samuel John Potter was a United States Senator from Rhode Island and was a prominent Country Party anti-Federalist leader. Born in South Kingston Township, Potter completed preparatory studies, studied law, and was admitted to the bar and practiced. He was deputy governor of Rhode Island from 1790 to 1799 and again from 1800 to 1803. He was also a presidential elector in 1792 and 1796. Potter was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the U.S. Senate and served from March 4, 1803, until his death in Washington, D.C. on October 14, 1804. Interment was in the family burial ground, Kingston, Washington County, Rhode Island.
